Vapor Barrier Shirt AMAZING Warmth during Big Sur Snowfall

Warmlite Shirt test Feb 25, 2011

Vapor Barrier Shirt

Vapor Barrier Shirt

Snow swirled around me as I began walking up a 3,000 ft Big Sur mountain. Snow is rare enough in Big Sur, but even less common was the type of shirt I was testing.

Its called a Vapor Barrier Shirt, no thicker than a dress shirt, from a clever firm called Warmlite. While walking uphill starting about 500 feet above sea level (ASL), the air temperature could not have been warmer than 32 degrees F  as snow landed on me. Continue reading

Cosmology – Personal Notes from
Two World Class Cosmologists

I’m thrilled.

Just received two courteous personal notes from the world’s leading cosmologist – Professor James Peebles of Princeton, and England’s Astronomer Royal – Martin Rees at Cambridge University (England).

I had written to them asking for help in finding a “definitive definition” of “Big Bang.”

Professor Peebles wrote back —

Cynthia Williams-Grande Dame
of Carmel Highlands

We have lost the Grande Dame of Carmel Highlands,

Cynthia and Peace

Cynthia and Peace

whose kindnesses and community reached far, far beyond our area – literally around the world.

Cynthia Criley Williams died last week. In the words of another grand woman, Darby Worth, Cynthia was a “Good old gal. She had a good run.”

She leaves a legacy of a loving family and caring friends, gracious parties and easy generosity.

People often came from across the globe to attend her parties, the same goes for Cynthia’s memorial.

Windsurfing Fast in Light Winds

Windsurfing Carmel Lagoon

Windsurfing at Carmel Lagoon

Back in the 80s when I was winning lots of windsurfing races, I’d never owned a world class windsurfing board. I just sailed a fairly well tuned standard Windsurfer.

(Though I did sail that standard board over 35 mph when the world sailing speed record was only a couple miles per hour faster. So maybe I was sailing a world class board all along.) * Continue reading

David wins an International
Photography Competition

Eye Light - Winner of London's NewScientist Photography Competition

Eye Light – Winner of London’s NewScientist Photography Competition

I thought you might enjoy this with me. Especially since it was put on by a Science magazine (NewScientist) in England and the theme was light.

(I suspect it won because of my explanation even more than the beauty of the image.)

Here’s the page announcing my image that won  a Photography Contest in London yesterday —

I realize the judging art is entirely subjective, nevertheless — I’m thrilled.
