{"id":88,"date":"2011-02-01T16:25:15","date_gmt":"2011-02-01T23:25:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/fun\/?p=88"},"modified":"2017-01-06T22:00:48","modified_gmt":"2017-01-07T05:00:48","slug":"cosmology-note-from-leading-cosmologist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/fun\/cosmology-note-from-leading-cosmologist\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmology \u2013 Personal Notes from<br> Two World Class Cosmologists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I&#8217;m thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>Just received two courteous personal notes from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Peebles\">the world&#8217;s leading cosmologist &#8211; Professor James Peebles of Princeton,<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Rees\">England&#8217;s Astronomer Royal &#8211; Martin Rees at Cambridge University (England).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had written to them asking for help in finding a &#8220;definitive definition&#8221; of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cosmologyscience.com\/glossary.htm#BigBang\">Big Bang<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110805000416\/http:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/physics\/people\/faculty\/jim-peebles\/\">Professor Peebles<\/a> wrote back &#8212;<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Professor James Peebles of Princeton\" src=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110804222246\/http:\/\/www.princeton.edu\/physics\/people\/faculty\/jim-peebles\/peebles_p_j_e.gif\" title=\"Professor James Peebles of Princeton\" width=\"240\" height=\"240\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor James Peebles of Princeton<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Hello David<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The name Big Bang is a very poor choice because it suggests a moment of time &#8212; a bang &#8212; and maybe also a place &#8212; where the bang occurred. Neither is part of the reasonably well tested theory of the evolution of the universe from a hot dense state to what we see around us. But the name has stuck, so I have stopped boycotting it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you see the definition is a mess. The connotation to me is the relativistic theory of the expansion of the universe. <\/p>\n<p>\t&#8220;Cheers, Jim<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and when I get permission I will add Professor Rees&#8217;  note.<\/p>\n<p>To receive either note is an honor &#8211; but to get both . . . oh my.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m thrilled.
