Silver-Bullet Virus Killer: Colds, maybe Cancer and more

Cure for the Common Cancer

Here’s news of some extraordinary research — an experimental drug that seems to be able to make impotent any cells infected by any type of virus without harming healthy neighboring cells.

New drug could cure nearly any viral infection

Experimental drug could defeat any virus

This appears to be as radical an improvement for human health as penicillin was to bacteria.

Here’s how it works.

Nearly every virus generates strings of double-stranded RNA longer than 30 base pairs during transcription and replication.

Theres a natural enzyme called PKR that grabs RNA (double-stranded RNA) longer than 23 base pairs and binds to it.

Researcher Todd Rider of the MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory “glued” a protein that triggers cell suicide called APAF-1 (apoptotic protease activating factor 1 ) to the PKR.

The compound is called DRACO – standing for Double-stranded RNA (dsRNA)-activated caspase oligomeriser.

Rider “tested the drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them — including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.”

I predict you will not only be hearing about this a lot, but that you will be using it within 10 years to stop colds and apparently viral kinds of cancer.

However, Viruses are not always harmful. Since we harbor a few trillion in each of our bodies – some may actually be doing us good.

Food for thought — here’s an article “A few good viruses” by Hamish Clarke
