(I don&#8217;t know if anyone else was predicting &#8220;Carmageddon&#8221; would be a bust, but we nailed it.) This outcome would be no surprise to any well trained traffic engineer.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Friday July<\/strong> 15, 2011<\/u>: You&#8217;ve heard the hype that California&#8217;s Freeway 405 closing will cause &#8220;Carmageddon&#8221; &#8211; gigantic gridlock.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s wrong with this?<\/p>\n<p>1. Predictor of Distaster Cant Lose:<br \/>\nIf gigantic gridlock occurs &#8211; they were clever.<br \/>\nIf no gridlock occurs &#8211; their efforts to get people to do alternate transportation worked.<\/p>\n<p>Thats extremely misleading because I predict &#8211; traffic will DECLINE !<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n2. Over and over again when freeways are closed &#8211; traffic declines !!! <\/p>\n<p>Counter-intuitive &#8211; but real.<\/p>\n<p>Take a quick look at this article:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkablestreets.com\/wide.htm\">&#8220;Remove It and They Will Disappear&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;San Francisco&#8217;s Embarcadero Freeway, toppled in the &#8217;89 earthquake, and the city&#8217;s Central Freeway, torn down in 1995, were predicted to cause gridlock, but didn&#8217;t. When New York City&#8217;s Westside Highway collapsed in 1973, 53 percent of trips disappeared. And when citizens in Portland, Oregon replaced their <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Harbor Drive<\/strong> freeway with a waterfront park there was no traffic chaos. &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Surprise.<br \/>\n========<br \/>\nUpdate Saturday Morning (July 16, 2011): Traffic is fine so far &#8211; just as predicted here.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20110820004500\/http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com:80\/html\/nationworld\/2015630987_apuscaliforniacarmageddon.html\">The work is progressing, traffic is cooperating and it&#8217;s moving freely this morning<\/a>,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Carmaggedon?
