Brokaw Hall Memorial Bird Feeder for Heritage Society Fundraiser Created by Snick Farkas<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bird Feeder by Snick Farkas<\/p><\/div>Pacific Grove<\/strong> artist Snick Farkas<\/strong> has created a bird feeder entitled \u201cBrokaw Hall Memorial Bird Feeder (Missing Plaque & Footprint)\u201d for the PG Heritage Society\u2019s 7th Annual Heritage Houses for the Birds Contest and Auction. The fundraiser culminates on Sunday, October 2, 2011 at Elmarie Dyke Open Space, when this year\u2019s birdhouses are sold at silent auction.

\nThe bird feeder is an homage to the recently demolished city-owned historical structure at the Monarch Grove Sanctuary<\/strong>. The structure was built in 1914, and served as living quarters for the Del Monte Military Academy during the 1920s and housing for a forestry work camp in the 1930s. <\/p>\n

After the city obtained the building in the 1990s as part of the Butterfly Bond<\/strong> acquisition, it sat vacant until it fell into serious disrepair. After a decade of neglect, the city decided it was an attractive nuisance and a danger to visitors to the butterfly habitat. Shortly before demolition, while the building was surrounded by chain-link fence, the historic plaque was stolen. It remains at large (the base of the bird feeder is a facsimile).<\/p>\n
