Golf play stops at Sunset time \u2013 so must restaurant operations.<\/p>\n

The Herald published an unsigned, misinformed and misleading editorial<\/a> advocating for expansion of the Golf Club<\/strong> restaurant to the non-golf customers – after sunset hours. I wrote a response online, but their systems screwed up the formatting so it was barely readable. Here is what I wrote in a readable fashion (with minor improvements).<\/p>\n

\u201cthe clubhouse [that residents] opposed for so long\u201d = misleading. <\/p>\n

The Herald editorial makes it sound like the Clubhouse is a new concept and that it was always opposed.<\/p>\n

Both wrong.<\/p>\n

The earlier Club house existed there for many decades with no opposition.<\/p>\n

Neighbors only opposed the recent expansion because it was a financial mess and just as they suspected \u2013 the Camel\u2019s nose under the tent that would dramatically harm neighborhood quality of life<\/a> : <\/p>\n

Extremely expensive and No Business Plan (which was shown to be folly with the last concessionaire, not to mention the preposterous wall blocking views of the ocean). <\/p>\n

Now they want to expand uses to non-golf commerce. <\/p>\n

Even your own article on this disclosed the Pacific Grove’s City attorney has advised the Council they must comply with law<\/a> that requires a delay while the potential harms of the project are \u201cobjectively\u201d analyzed, but the City Manager<\/strong> and several Council people don’t care \u2013 and demand to go full speed ahead.<\/p>\n

On top of that the expansion of use beyond that related to golf — is solidly prohibited by City law. <\/p>\n

\u201cA functional clubhouse\u201d (what the Herald advocated for) is already allowed by law. <\/p>\n

Expanding the Clubhouse to non-golf uses<\/u> is not.<\/p>\n

Camel’s Nose<\/u>: The Herald argues the restaurant can\u2019t succeed when the \u201cconcessionaire is not allowed to provide dinner service.”<\/p>\n

Whoa. The concessionaire knew exactly what they were getting into when they signed the contract earlier this year. The \u201cBait and Switch\u201d was not on the concessionaire \u2013 it was to hoodwink neighbors.<\/p>\n

Then the editorial defends its \u201clets break the law\u201d conclusion with faulty logic — wordy accusations of \u201cNot in my Backyard\u201d and \u201cVocal minority.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the neighbors have said \u2013 if you want to allow that use \u2013 first try to change the law. The problem for Restaurant advocates is that changing the law would require allowing businesses in other Open spaces like our Parks and along the ocean. <\/p>\n

Restaurant advocates know that’s not likely to get voter approval.<\/p>\n

No, the Council should not approve turning the Clubhouse into a restaurant this week \u2013 because it is flatly illegal \u2013 in two different ways.<\/p>\n

More, . . . always more. <\/p>\n

No matter how much economic activity is going on \u2013 for some its never enough.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s called greed.<\/p>\n
