{"id":6456,"date":"2015-08-31T18:22:14","date_gmt":"2015-09-01T01:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/?p=6456"},"modified":"2026-03-19T13:58:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T20:58:57","slug":"queen-elizabeth-appreciates-john-livingstones-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/queen-elizabeth-appreciates-john-livingstones-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen Elizabeth appreciates John Livingstone&#8217;s Photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_6473\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6473\" class=\" wp-image-6473\" src=\"http:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/JohnLivinstone640b.jpg\" alt=\"John Livinstone - Master Photographer\" width=\"291\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/JohnLivinstone640b.jpg 478w, https:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/JohnLivinstone640b-112x150.jpg 112w, https:\/\/daviddilworth.com\/pol\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/JohnLivinstone640b-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 291px) 100vw, 291px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6473\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Livinstone &#8211; Master Photographer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Before settling in a lovely Portland, Oregon suburb, <strong>bon vivant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnlivingstone.net\/\">John Livingstone enjoyed an idyllic many-decades career in Carmel as a respected master photographer<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003J8RQJI\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B003J8RQJI&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=dilwosinspila-20&amp;linkId=6ZHINHRY4UF635OT\">author<\/a> and restaurant reviewer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>He had the pleasure of \u00a0meeting and photographing many fascinating characters and their events; keeping some of the nicer ones as friends.<\/p>\n<p>He admits his fifty-year career was recently &#8220;<strong>capped by a gracious letter from England&#8217;s Queen Elizabeth&#8221;<\/strong> in response to a photograph he took on her Coronation Day, some sixty two years ago in a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swanage\">Swanage, Dorsetshire<\/a> pub.<\/p>\n<p>During World War II, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegoodpubguide.co.uk\/pub\/view\/Anchor-BH19-2NU\">The Anchor Pub<\/a> was Pfc Livingstone&#8217;s favorite off-duty destination along with his army buddies in the small <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>English Channel<\/strong> town.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>Revisiting Swanage<\/strong> in 1953 John was having a beer in his favorite pub while listening to a radio broadcast of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronation_of_the_British_monarch\">Coronation Ceremonies<\/a>. He noticed two elderly men listening proudly and intently to the broadcast on the pub radio, and in the pub&#8217;s dim natural light propped his camera on the pub&#8217;s counter to take a slow shutter exposure of the two gents with a portrait of the new Queen bordered by British bunting on the wall behind them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/pamplinmedia.com\/images\/artimg\/00003491394223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"312\" height=\"416\" \/>The photo, entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnlivingstone.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/galleries\/post-362\/full\/Coronation%20Broadcast%20-%20trimmed.jpg\"><strong>Coronation Broadcast<\/strong><\/a>&#8221; won <strong class='StrictlyAutoTagBold'>First Prize<\/strong> in an international competition the following year, and was <strong>exhibited in the Smithsonian Institution and the Pentagon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sixty years later, in 2013, he sent the picture to the Queen in commemoration of the sixty years of her reign. The Queen, via her Lady-in-Waiting, responded, writing,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<em><strong>The Queen wishes me to thank you for your letter which you sent in celebration of the anniversary of Her Majesty&#8217;s Coronation. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Queen was interested in your wartime service spent in Swanage and that you revisited the town at the time of Her Majesty&#8217;s Coronation.
